To enable the City of Edmundston to effectively manage the entire place name topic, City Council has put in place a Place Name Administrative Policy.

A Place Names Committee was also established with a mandate to advise and make recommendations on any matter relating to the designation, change or replacement of place names for municipal buildings, public spaces, monuments, parks and green spaces, streets and trails as well as the establishment, where appropriate, of a public onsultation process.The committee is composed of citizens and municipal employees.

The primary role of place names is to insure the identity of a location. The names given to places often use the geography, people and significant events, history or local traditions emphasizing the community's collective memory.

Some of the specific tasks of the committee include:

  • Develop and ensure respect for the fundamental criteriae for selecting and assigning named;
  • Suggest names for roads, parks and public buildings;
  • Evaluate proposals for new names and make recommendations to Council;
  • Create and maintain a bank of historic names for different sectors of the city.
